2    Congleton Town FC U12 Black
1    Macclesfield Tigers

(Match Date: Saturday 9th October 2021)
Congleton Blacks vs Macclesfield Tigers

Today was a lot better weather for football compared to the wind and rain of last week. We hosted Macclesfield Tigers today, looking to get our season back on track after a tough couple of weeks. We had a bumper squad of 12 which turned out crucial in the latter stages of the game! We started the game at a good pace, involved in battles all over the pitch against equally matched opposition. It was clear from the early stages that this would be a closely fought affair. In the first 10 minutes there were few chances at either end due with the majority of the match being played out in the midfield area. We were strong in this area today with the welcome return of long time injured captain Archie DW, who slotted straight back in protecting the defence. The first couple of chances fell to Macclesfield as they worked a couple of one on ones with the Matthew, who bravely rose to the challenge and made crucial saves to keep the score at 0-0. Half way through the 1st half Matthew was called upon again to make a vital save, from the resulting kick down field the ball was worked out to Lucas who drove into the area and calmly slotted the ball into the net for 1-0. This gave the boys a huge lift and they eyed a 2nd goal before half time! In a similar move Ol found Lucas with a great through ball and Lucas brought a great save from the keeper. On the stroke of half time we won a freekick on the edge of the area, Ol beat the wall but the Macclesfield keeper produced a top save to keep it out. There was still time for another brilliant save from Matthew to keep the score at 1-0 going into half time. The half belonged to the keepers as on another day we would have seen goals galore at both ends!

Half time score:- Congleton 1 – Macclesfield 0
The 2nd half was and equally closely fought affair. The boys seemed determined to protect their lead with all they had, there were countless bodies thrown in front of shots and brave heads meeting crosses. This is really pleasing as it is an area we have struggled with in the past! We were winning the midfield battle and defence were limiting the number of Macclesfield attacks compared to in the first half, there were still a couple of occasions where we needed the skill and bravery again of Matthew to save the day! With ten minutes to go, Lucas drove forward through the middle, eventually being stopped illegally at the 5th attempt to give us another promising freekick just outside the box. After his sighter in the 1st half, Ol made no mistake in curling the ball into the far corner giving the keeper no chance. Now with a 2-0 lead to hold on to and numerous subs to keep fresh legs on the pitch the boys dug in as Macc pushed on with nothing to lose. The pressure paid off as the ball broke Macclesfield’s way in the box after another fine save from Matthew to make the score 2-1. Heads didn’t drop and the boys continued to throw themselves into blocks and tackles, Jenson became a great outlet to relieve pressure and eat up valuable time, driving forward to take the ball out of harms way. The final whistle blew and we had won!

Final score:- Congleton 2 – Macclesfield 1.
After the disappointment of last week, it was brilliant to see such a positive response in a tight game that could go either way, super proud boys. There were a lot of stand out performances today, Jack showed really pace and determination on numerous occasions to thwart the Macc attacks. Jenson was dominant in the middle of the park. Aidan put in a great shift upfront in a game of few attacking moments. Goal scorers Lucas and Ol provided us with some intelligent play. However there hasn’t been too many easier decisions when it came to picking a man of the match, as echoed by anyone watching and commentating on the game there was only one name mentioned. A massive match winning performance from Matthew today, well done!
