(Match Date: Saturday 2nd October 2021)
Hurdsfield vs Congleton Blacks

We travelled with a small squad to Hurdsfield on a what turned out to be a wet and windy day. The game started at a frantic pace and was an end to end game. The boys started with real determination from the start in less than ideal conditions. As the game progressed Hurdsfield started to get on top, Matthew produced a string of saves including 1 amazing full stretch dive to keep us at 0-0. The pressure remained and we found ourselves 2-0 after 2 similar goals coming from strong play down Hurdsfield’s right. We battled on and were unlucky not to grab a goal back before half time.

Half time: Hurdsfield 2 – Congleton 0
I told the boys there was still plenty in this game for them and the next goal was crucial! It took less than a minute for us to get on the scoresheet as Felix pounced on a loose ball from a corner to fire home from close range, game on! We really grew into the game and were matching Hurdsfield stride for stride, Jenson’s 2nd half performance to man mark Hurdsfield’s dangerman was a big factor a job that he can be really proud of. We were in the ascendancy and got our reward 15 minutes into the 2nd half from another corner, Lucas back covering in defence pounced on the cleared corner to strike the ball first time into the far corner from 20 yards! We were on the front foot now and looked likely to go on and win the game with everyone battling hard for each other. The game changed in the space of a minute with only 5 minutes left on the clock. Their keeper made a great save at the 2nd attempt and from the resulting kick from his hands he slipped, sending the ball high in the air missing everyone and ending up with their striker one on one to make it 3-2! We conceded 2 more in the dying minutes as we pushed for an equaliser.

Final score: Hurdsfield 5 – Congleton 2.

As stated by both Hurdsfield manager and the referee at full time, the scoreline nowhere near reflected the game. The boys should be really proud of their efforts in the game and on another day could’ve easily turned it around and won. We asked for a response from the result the week before and couldn’t have got a stronger one from all 9 on the pitch. There were numerous candidates for man of the match, Matthew kept us in the game especially in the first half. Jack and Jacob were strong and resilient at the back. As stated earlier, Jenson nullified Hurdsfield’s main threat with a superb second half performance. But for me Zack’s all round contribution both in attack and helping defensively shown guts along with a tremendous positive attitude even when we were 2-0 at half time means he was my man of the match, well done Zack. In conclusion, we will play a lot worse and win games this season so don’t be too hung up on the result!
