U12 Black - Match Report

A Battling Away Draw

(Mike Ransom 18/09/2021)

3    Congleton Town FC U12 Black
3    Davenham

(Match Date: Saturday 18th September 2021)
The first away day of the season and a debut in goal for Matthew
Today we travelled to Winsford to tackle Davenham in our 2nd league game of the season. It was obvious from the start that the game was going to be a closely fought affair with both teams mixing good football with some strong determined defensive play. Davenham took the lead with their first real chance of the game to lead 1-0, the boys were not fazed by this and carried on trying to replicate the flowing football from last week. Their determination paid off when the ball fell to Ol on the edge of the area and his toe poke (his words, we classed it as an accurate strike) found the corner of the net. Jack and Jacob were carrying on from where they left of last week with some strong defending and good balls out from the back, this lead to the 2nd goal for Congleton as a strong ball from inside his own half from Jacob wasn’t dealt with and ended up in the back of the net. The game remained an end to end tussle and Davenham levelled the score from a freekick that bounced around our box a few times before going in.

Half time score: Davenham 2 - Congleton Blacks 2

The 2nd half began in the same vein with our midfield of Jenson, Felix, Archie, Zack and Lucas involved in numerous battles that they stood their ground admirably. On a tighter pitch than we are used we struggled to get our wing play in to action that was so fruitful last week. We fell behind again to another ball that pinballed around in our box before squeezing in. Mid way through the 2nd half we had a great save from Matthew to thank for keeping us only one down, he was great all day covering the long through balls forward from Davenham that caused us a few issues in our preseason friendly against the same opposition 3 weeks earlier. As the 2nd half wore on we began to take control of the game. We got the equaliser we deserved thanks to some forceful play in midfield from Felix driving forward and sending the ball goal bound for Freddie to bravely score from close range. With 10 minutes to go we drove forward with Zack make good inroads down the right hand side. Sadly we couldn’t find a late winner, Jenson going extremely close with a late effort from the edge of the box.

Full time score: Davenham 3 – Congleton Blacks 3

Today was an end to end closely fought game where the lads showed they can battle hard when there is limited opportunity to play expansive football, probably a fair result although I though we may pinch it towards the end. A really positive debut from Matthew today in goal which bodes well for the rest of the season. My man of the match today goes to someone who mixed some strong defending with some purposeful forward balls from deep, well done Jacob!
