Rovers 'v' Nantwich Town. 11.11.18

(Mark Arneil 12/11/2018)
This week's kick off against Nantwich Town in the Cheshire Cup was put back 30 minutes so everyone could pay there respects to the fallen hero's with a perfectly observed minutes silence.
Rovers started on the front foot and Statham saw a looping shot dip over. Moreno was doing some really good work down the left with Wedgbury. Riley went off on one of his trademark driving runs which the keeper did well to smother. Rovers thought they took a deserved lead when Wedgbury squared the ball to Riley who slotted home only for Wedgbury to be judged off side.
Rovers did eventually take the lead when Statham played a lovely ball to Negus who converted.
Negus soon doubled his tally when he was alert and stole the ball off the defender and slammed the ball home.
Next it was Riley's turn, he received the ball with his back to goal and turned the defence inside out before produced an exquisite finish to make it 3. Nantwich started to ask a few questions with a series of free kicks which were well defended, but the pressure finally became too much and a little flick from a free kick found it's way over the line.
Statham was really starting to pull the strings in midfield as he released Wedgbury who surely put the game to bed with an outstanding chip taking the score at half time to 4-1.

Two changes at half time saw F. Evans replace Sharpe in goal and Walton replacing the impressive Moreno at left back.

Another Nantwich central free kick lead to them getting back in the game after F.evans was unable to gather the bouncing ball.
Rovers should have had the chance to restore there three goal lead from the spot after Negus was taken down but the ref waved play on.
F. Evans did well to sweep up outside of his area with his head and was unlucky to see the ball come back over his head and in to the net. 4-3 game on.
Rovers needed to step up a couple of gears and that's what happened when Negus completed his hat trick with a left foot finish following some good work by Braisby.
Johnston and Hopkins were now like to rocks at the back, winning every header and tackle that came their way.
Negus made it 6-3 after some good work by Walton and Statham put him through on goal. He rounded the keeper and slotted home, although he was maybe a little fortunate not to be called off side.
Rovers were really turning the screw now and J. Evans was bundled over in the area for a penalty, but unfortunately Riley dragged his penalty wide.
Riley didn't let the miss play on his mind and was soon off on another of his gut busting runs. Taking on three defenders, he showed great composure to pick out the oncoming Negus to make it 7-3 with a fine volley.
Eight was soon on its way when Riley turned on the edge of the box and finished into the top corner.
Braisby was next to find the net grazing the underside of the crossbar with a peach of a shot from outside the area.
Double figures was to arrive before the end when Statham again played a wonderful ball, and Wedgbury did the rest.

Full time 10-3
A truly fantastic team performance!

This week's Roy of the rovers goes to Ellis Statham.
