Rovers 'v' Tytherington. 16.09.18

(Mark Arneil 17/09/2018)
While the senior management team were sunning themselves and sipping fine wine in France, the rest of the Rovers clan travelled to a very wet Macclesfield to take on Tytherington. The opening exchanges were very scrappy as both teams struggled to gain control of midfield, not through the lack of effort from Statham, Evans and Riley. A few half chances came Rovers way when Riley fired over and a good cross from Braisby eluded everyone. Tytherington tried to break the rovers back line but Hopkins was there to make an important block. Rovers were starting to get frustrated, unable to play the free-flowing football we are used to seeing, and the ball not sticking to the feet of Riley or Wedgbury. Wedgbury tried his luck from distance which was comfortably saved. The frustration got worse for rovers as Tytherington took the lead. This seemed to wake up rovers and Negus and Riley started to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and soon fashioned an equaliser when Negus found Riley, who's shot was saved but Wedgbury was on hand to score the rebound. Rovers thought they'd taken the lead, but Wedgburys effort came back of the post. Rovers didn't have to wait long to take the lead when Riley drove from midfield and slotted the ball home. The first rovers change saw Simpson come on for Arneil, Hopkins then slotted in to left back position. Tytherington looked for the leveller but Sharpe was off his line to clear. With half time looming Braisby unleashed a shot which flew just over the top. Rovers made a further change before half time, seeing Reardon make way for Edwards down the left. Rovers did grab another goal when Johnston's clearance fell to Wedgbury who calmly made the half time score 1-3.
One change at half time when F. Evans went in goal to replace Sharpe. Rovers went out to kill the game off and they looked like they had done that when Negus put in a cross from the right and Riley arrived right on que to make it 1-4. Hopkins and Braisby were both getting forward from full back to combine with Negus down the right and Edwards down the left. The steady Statham came off for Moreno in midfield. Tytherington weren't finished in this game as they pulled a goal back to make it 2-4. Tytherington looked certain to pull another goal back quickly but from nowhere Hopkins made a superbly timed challenge. That would be Hopkins last involvement in the game as Walton replaced him. Great defending again from Rovers denied another certain goal when Johnston reacted to danger and found himself on his own goal line to head clear. Riley went to complete his 2nd hat-trick in three games to surely put the game out of sight and make it 2-5. A tired looking Wedgbury who had run his socks of playing as the front man made way for Reardon. A cross in from the right found its way to Edwards who didn't quite catch hold of his strike and saw it go wide. Riley normally the man who players look for with long throws found himself becoming the long throw provider and Negus with the ball at his feet cleverly clipped the ball in the net. 2-6. Tytherington showed great determination and never gave up and converted another chance to make it 3-6. Some good work down the left by Edwards saw a big goal mouth scramble and eventually Reardon got a shot away just wide. Tytherington again came forward and pulled another goal back, 4-6. Surely Rovers couldn't throw this away! Indeed, they didn’t, and they made it 4-7 through Reardon just before the full-time whistle. Final score, Rovers win 7-4.
