U12 White - Match Report

Honours Even In Local Derby

(Phil Smith 18/11/2019)

2    Congleton Rovers JFC U12 White
2    Vale Juniors Vikings

(Match Date: Saturday 16th November 2019)
Saturday saw the first meeting between two Congleton teams, Vale Juniors Vikings and Congleton Rovers Whites in the Mid Cheshire under 12 Second Division.
The local derby hosted by the Vale Vikings at Eaton Bank Academy started in a typically frenetic pace with schoolyard bragging rights at stake for both sets of players.
The home side took the lead after only ten minutes when Lucas Bennet dispatched a penalty in emphatic fashion after a Vale striker was brought down just inside the penalty area giving the referee an easy decision to award the penalty.
Rovers quickly began to create chances to draw level, the first when a cross made its way to the back post only for the Rovers striker to fail to bundle the ball home from close range.
The visitors came close again when Will Peterson broke clear of the home defence only to see his shot brilliantly saved by the Vale goalkeeper.
Soon afterwards the Vale keeper was thanking his luck after Bodhi Waterhouse stepped up to smash a free kick from 25 yards against a post.
The home keeper was eventually beaten by Waterhouse from a free kick in a nearly identical position which was hit with too much power and accuracy for the Vale keeper to keep out.
As the game approached half time a third free kick was conceded by Vale Vikings and it was no surprise when Waterhouse stepped up to take it. This time the shot seemed to be heading over the bar before dipping wickedly into the roof of the net, again giving the Vale keeper no chance to make a save.
At half time the score was Vale Juniors Vikings 1 – Congleton Rovers Whites 2
The second half started with Vale Vikings on the front foot, looking to get themselves back into the game, with a couple of half chances coming to nothing.
The game continued on a similar theme to the first with plenty of honest endeavour in midfield, but few chances of any not for either side.
When the equalizer for Vale arrived it came from a quick break down their right hand side saw Sam Galvin cut inside and finish tidily from an acute angle.
Vale came close to taking the lead when they had a free kick of their own from 25 yards, only to see Rovers goalkeeper Jack Brammall push the a shot that was heading for the top corner past the post for a corner.
As the game headed into the last 5 minutes Rovers were very unlucky not to pinch an equalizer, first seeing a shot from the edge of the area hit the crossbar with the follow up effort from Waterhouse hitting the inside of the post, rolling across the goal line before being cleared be Vale.
Neither team however could find a winner and both teams had to be satisfied with the draw.
Rovers’ man of the match was Preston Borrow
